Susan Moffat first sensed God’s call to missions in high school. Following fourteen years of post-secondary education and work experience, God opened the door for her to join AIM, departing Canada in 1981 to teach grades one and two at Rethy Academy, AIM’s missionary children’s school in Eastern Zaire. While there, she met a handsome Rethy alumnus, Chuck Pinkerton, son of AIM missionary parents. In 1986 they were married and began ministry together with AIM in 1991.
Having the opportunity to experience mission aviation firsthand as a young passenger—a rare occasion for a family of eight who usually worked their way through the mud in a Ford pickup on the Zairian roads below—Chuck gained an interest in aviation ministry and trained as a pilot-mechanic. He then served with AIM AIR, Africa Inland Mission’s air arm, first in Nairobi, and then in the country of Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), based in the town of Bunia. Following the country’s rebellion and AIM’s subsequent evacuation, they moved to Kenya, serving at Gatab – AIM AIR’s small base atop Mount Kulal, in the North. While there, Susan served as a teacher at the African Inland Church elementary school and helped lead women’s Bible studies. In addition to her roles in teaching, Susan provided assistance in the AIM AIR offices, both in Zaire and Northern Kenya.
Since returning from Africa in 2001, both have served as Ontario Provincial Mobilizers for AIM Canada, with Chuck moving into the role of AIM Canada’s IT Manager in 2005. Susan continued as Provincial Mobilizer for Ontario till the end of 2019 when she retired from formal ministry. She now provides editorial assistance for the Canadian home office as needed, while Chuck continues working in the AIM Canada office as IT Manager.
