Patricia Derksen

Serving with AIM Canada at the Pwani Bible College, Kenya
Growing up I never wanted to be a missionary…and I certainly did not want to be a missionary in Africa!  But God had other plans.  Several years before the last of my children left home, God nudged me to take a step of faith and join a short-term missions team going to Ecuador (doing mostly wordless puppet shows where the Ecuadorian pastors would bring the message).  The next year I joined a short-term team going to Malawi and Mozambique sewing school uniforms for children at an orphanage.  While in Mozambique God called me to close my business and embark on a year-long adventure working in the AIM office in Kampala, Uganda.  One of the best years of my life!
I returned home at the end of the year, as planned ,but my taste for serving God cross-culturally had grown immensely.  Over the next eighteen years I worked full-time in the secular world but spent most of my vacation time and money participating in short-term missions with various organizations in many parts of the world each year.  This opened my eyes to what God is doing around the world and cultivated a desire to participate in this mission adventure in whatever way God could use me.
When I lost my job three years before I was due to retire, God led me to teach for two terms at Pwani International Christian College in Mombasa Kenya.  I returned home this April and am presently teaching one course online.  Online teaching is however not the same as in-person teaching.  Sometimes the power is out or the internet goes down in Kenya and I cannot reach the students.  I’m back in Kenya teaching in-person at Pwani for another two terms since September 2024.  My desire is to split my time between Canada and Kenya (teaching two terms per year) for the next number of years.
In my role as a teacher at the Bible college, I am helping to train up national workers to reach their own people in Africa…and to kindle a passion for reaching the unreached in more difficult African countries.  Students in my classes range from those who have just graduated high school all the way to those who have been pastoring for up to thirty years but have never experienced any Bible college training.  It is both challenging and rewarding.
